Landmark pledge to phase out Coal!
However China, the U.S. and India, the world’s biggest coal burners, have not signed up!
Today’s big news!
It is Day 5, Energy Day at the Climate Conference taking place at the COP26 Climate Summit in Glasgow, Scotland. “This 2021 is the ‘make or break year for action on energy transition’,” according to the United Nations.
Today a pledge to end the use of coal was signed by over 45 countries and U.S. was not one of them. However, the U.S., Canada, Italy and Denmark are among 25 countries to commit to ending international public financing for fossil fuel projects. “Campaigners called the commitment a ‘historic’ step in turning off the funding taps for fossil fuel projects. But it did not include major Asian countries responsible for the bulk of such financing abroad.” (https://www.reuters.com/business/cop/19-countries-plan-cop26-deal-end-financing-fossil-fuels-abroad-sources-2021-11-03/).

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, mainly caused by human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels.
The Paris Agreement’s goals are to stop global temperatures from rising by any more than 2 degrees Celsius. Governments at COP26/UNFCCC are pushing to prevent global temperature increases from exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius. Will the private sectors cooperate?
