California and Tribal Wildfire Resilience
partnerships promoting Tribal Traditional Environmental Knowledge

Here in California, we co-exist with 5 million acres of forests, watersheds, and wildlife habitat. Wildfire is an ever-pressing concern as millions of Californians live in or near wildlands. Balancing the reduction of wildlands fire fuel hazards and protecting ecosystem integrity is a delicate balance. CAL FIRE is a California state agency on the front-lines of preventing wildfires in the State Responsibility Area (SRA) [of California] and is the largest firefighting force in the nation. Fire and firestorms and floods and earthquakes, “CAL FIRE serves as a full-service, “all-risk” department, capable of responding to a wide range of emergencies, including but not limited to medical aid, hazardous material spills, swift water rescues, search and rescue missions, civil disturbances, train wrecks, floods, earthquakes, and more.”
Tribal Wildfire Resilience Program
Tribal Wildfire Resilience grants is part of CAL FIRE’s Climate and Energy Program and supports California Native American tribes in managing ancestral lands, implementing and promoting Traditional Environmental Knowledge in wildfire resilience, and establishing wildfire safety for tribal communities.
