Can you hear the ancient Greek Sirens with their enchanting music and singing voices?
As the story goes--In Homer’s Odyssey, The Sirens sing to the Greek hero Odysseus about his victory in Troy and their knowledge of the world. The Song of the Sirens was said to be so enticing that seafarers would fall to the fate of drowning themselves, or dashing their vessels upon the rocks, so that they could get closer to the source of the charming and exquisite singing. Odysseus wanted to hear their song, so he had himself tied to his ship’s mast so that he would not be able to steer the ship off its course. He pleaded with his men to untie him, but they obey his original wishes and tie him tighter to the mast. They pass the enchanting isle unscathed.
Some ancient Greek sources tell of Zeus giving the Sirens the island of Anthemoessa as a new home, although later Roman writers would instead have the nymphs living upon the three rocky islands called Sirenum scopuli.
Here along our rocky California Coast, it feels like the edge of the world. And maybe the Sirens now roam! The ocean beckons and the sirens do still sing, and one must be careful not to succumb to the trance.
